RCM on CBS

Back in November Beth Allums (The Monkey and Me) and I (Lark Studio) were guest on Virginia This Morning on our local CBS station. We were asked to come on and demonstrate a quick, no sew holiday garland. If you missed it, you can now see it here (you've gotta love YouTube):

A quick tutorial is now located on the RCM website. You can navigate directly to the tutorial via the Links section to the right on this blog. I will be back on Virginia This Morning on Thursday, January 3rd offering up some crafty tips on how to recycle calendars and holiday cards. Stay tuned for more crafty video tutorials!

Happy Holidays!

AlterNatives in Carytown destroyed by fire

On Saturday, Dec 8th a fire started near the water heater at AlterNatives (3320 West Cary St) which caused nearly $500,000 worth of damage to the store.

Fortunately, no one was hurt, but this fire destroyed more than just their inventory.

AlterNatives is a retail outlet for fairly-traded crafts that directly supports over 100 Guatemalan artisans and their families, many of whom have no other source of income. It is also part of the broader Highland Support Project, which does a variety of humanitarian work in the Guatemalan highlands (including empowering women to start their own craft businesses).

The busy Christmas shopping season accounts for the lion's share of their yearly sales, so this fire could not have come at a worse time. Efforts are currently underway to move to a temporary store front across the street, but for now store employees are set up on the sidewalk in front of the store selling jewelry and other items that were stored offsite & escaped the blaze.

How you can help:

Donations to help rebuild the store can be sent to:

AlterNatives
P.O. Box 7185
Richmond, Va. 23221

Please make checks out to "AlterNatives" and put "re-building" in the memo line.

Fellow Etsy sellers: I am donating 10% of my December (and probably January) Etsy sales to the rebuilding fund--if anybody would like to join me, I would love to put together a post featuring everyone's shops. Email me at BeeMail@BeesKneesStudio.com

Also, there are many smoke-tarnished silver items from inside the store that they would like to try and salvage. Anyone with silver-cleaning expertise who would like to help with that or offer suggestions is welcome to contact Kim at alternativemarketrva@gmail.com

Are your DIY skills Painfully Hip?

I know quite a few ladies and gents who can knit, sew, cut, paste, and stencil up a storm. I want to see you all represent in the Painfully Hip DIY contest.

You could win:
$50 gift certificate from Lady Language
ReadyMade: How to Make Almost Everything from ModCloth
plus $50 in cold hard cash!

I had never heard of DoesThisLookStupid.com, I have my significant other to tell me that, I guess. But the ReadyMade book is awesome and, well, $50 is too.

Chop Suey Holiday Bizarre Market

This afternoon, I stopped by Chop Suey Books to check out the locally crafted goodness for sale in their upstairs gallery space.

WOW. Just wow.

Bird Cox (the market organizer) and all of the Richmond crafters involved have just completely outdone themselves: it looks great. I was there for at least an hour shopping because I couldn't decide--I wanted everything! (My boyfriend almost had to drag me out of there.)

A sampling of the craftiness you will find:

(colorful and yummy soaps by hexy)

shoes and squids by stopsandstarts

ornaments, gift tags, and other holiday trimmings...

Some Richmond Etsy Street Team members you will find include: monkeydogstudio, lookability, autumnomatopoeia, & historicallyinspired just to name a few!

You will also find a few items from Richmond Craft Mafiosas, namely me (BeesKneesStudio) and Deanna (missing monsters!) .

Market runs through Dec 24 during regular store hours.
